Gucci Mane‘s labelmate has yet again had legal issues, adding fuel to the legend that the Atlanta rapper is cursed.
According to police records obtained by XXL, 1017 Global musician Mac Critter was detained on Monday (Jan. 2) and charged with first-degree murder. A police document names Mac, real name Daniel Bates, as one of three persons accused of killing Markeith Taylor on December 21, 2022, in North Memphis. Four suspects allegedly met Taylor in a deserted lot while carrying firearms, according to the police. A witness has positively identified one of the suspects, Gary Taylor, as the guy who fired the rounds that hit the victim.
Witnesses also identified Mac Critter from the photo lineup. Danterio Owens was also charged with first-degree murder in connection with the murder. The suspect was arrested and remains in prison without custody.
On Tuesday (January 3), Mack’s attorney, Arthur Horne, released the following statement to local Memphis news station Fox 13:
“My client thought he was out on bail,” Horn said. “Although the affidavit claims he was there, he’s not the shooter. He was a suspect when Gary Taylor got Bond. Optimistic we’ll bond today.” It was, but it wasn’t.”
“We urge his fans and the public not to make hasty judgments on this matter,” Horn said. I am optimistic that we can clear his name so he can move forward with his career.”
The Mac Critter team started Instagram stories on Tuesday.
“Mac said he’d be home soon, but he was a little too much,” read the message on IG. “He would like to thank all the fans who have supported him since day one!!”
Mac Critter’s next trial date is January 10th.
Online rumours regarding a “curse” on artists who sign with Gucci Mane’s label have been sparked by news of the arrest.
“For so long, Mane Critter has been rhyming. Being on this type of garbage after he finally obtained a contract is absurd. Gucci Mane’s curse is to blame, “One individual tweeted.
Another guy chimed in, “All of Gucci Mane’s artists have a curse on them or something.
Another user wrote, “Boy is it a Gucci curse or something EVERY man sign got locked up.”
The fourth member of Gucci Mane’s eight-member label, Mac Critter, has been imprisoned for major crimes in the past 12 months. Pooh Shiesty was given a prison term of more than five years in April of last year after pleading guilty to a charge of conspiracy with a firearm. After melting off his ankle monitor and eluding capture while out on bond for a charge of firearm possession in May of last year, Foogiano was given a five-year prison term. Hotboy Wes was detained on a robbery accusation in Texas last January.
Another unfortunate event involving the label was the terrible death of promising young artist Big Scarr late last month.
